Hiding in Plain Sight

There is always a world happening beneath the world, which begs the question, what is real? There is always a self happening beneath the self, which begs the question, who is the self?

We show what we show. We hide so much more. We are masters of the hidden and masters of social scripts.

Do we have any idea what it takes to truly know someone especially if that someone has no intention of being truly known or if that someone has a protector guarding the self and soul?

What does it mean to know thyself?

People lie everyday about who they are. Existing in the world almost requires it, to varying degrees. Think about how this translates to a therapist and client. Clients lie. Clients control the narrative, and/or there is a power struggle over whose is the right one. The dynamic is unequal due to the power differential. Why on earth would a client give over the self to someone with more power – power to evaluate, analyze, determine, diagnose, etc. Why would anyone do that unless they truly felt the therapist were altruistic and/or if they needed to manipulate an outcome?

It’s mostly theatrics, wheel spinning.

Therapists were once clients, too, maybe still. We all are human, broken and healing, ugly and beautiful. This is why I am, at best, a guide not a therapist. Clients are smart. The therapist’s couch or Zoom room is too small a container for a soul cure. Like a church pew is too small a box for the spirit.

Humans are more vast than even our own wildest imaginations.

It is a psychic violation when a human being analyzes another without permission. It is plain bad manners for anyone to do this. Even those trained to do so are subject to their own bias, their own lived experience, their own story.

I am angry with therapists and therapy, absolutely. Therapeutic language is everywhere, boxing us in, keeping us coddled and coded and safe and the same. It does not create change. It perpetuates hierarchies and state regulated relationships.

In the work I do, your story is yours. You ask the questions, you name your intent, you walk and listen for the answers soul has for you. I’m a witness, a companion along the way.

I know and love people who are therapists and I share this with them just the same. We agree to differ. This is me. You do you. Same with those who feel served by the therapeutic paradigm.
